LIFE ViVaCCAdapt – Adapting to the impacts of climate change in the Vipava Valley is the first Slovenian project from the sub-programme for Climate Action, priority area Climate Change Adaptation (CCA). It is one of two Slovenian project proposals which were successful at the 2015 Call for proposals for LIFE grants and are co-financed by European Commission.

The introductory meeting of project LIFE ViVaCCAdapt was held on Monday, 12th September 2016, at the seat of the coordinating beneficiary – the ROD agency for Development Ajdovščina. The purpose of the project is to establish measures to avoid the negative economic impact of climate change.  One of the project activities is a development of comprehensive strategy for climate change adaptation, development and testing of operational support system for decision-making on irrigation, and planting and testing of new green windbreaks.

Agriculture is one of the major economic activities in Vipava Valley. Endeavour to self-sufficiency of the area, as well as activities to promote the economic development of the valley, give the agriculture here an additional value.

Droughts, floods, frosts and strong winds are important factors that hinder the development of agriculture in Vipava Valley. It is expected that the future climate change will increase the damaging potential of environmental factors in the Valley.

Also for this reason the ROD agency for Development Ajdovščina prepared a project proposal LIFE ViVaCCAdapt together with the Municipality of Ajdovščina, Institute for Water of the Republic of Slovenia, University of Ljubljana – Biotechnical Faculty and companies Hidrotehnik and BO-MO. The project proposal was successfully applied for LIFE grant in September 2015

The value of a 5-year project is 869,028 euros, out of which 520,516 euros represents EU financial contribution (60 % of eligible project budget). During preparation time, the ROD agency for Development Ajdovščina has successfully applied for national funding, which will be in the amount of 173,506 euros (20 % of eligible project budget) provided by the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.
