The Energy Globe Award is one of the prestigious environmental prizes received by projects focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy and resource conservation. Awards are awarded on national and international level. Among the recipients for 2018 at national level is the Slovenian project LIFE Stop CyanoBloom.

For the development of innovative technology for cyanobacterial bloom control, Arhel received the prestigious National Energy Globe Award for Slovenia. The technology, tested and demonstrated in the framework of the LIFE Stop CyanoBloom project, is based on the scientific knowledge that cyanobacterial viruses carry out the main control over the density of cyanobacterial population. They are causing lysis or degradation of cyanobacterial cells. However, they need a certain trigger from the environment for their activation and proliferation in the cell. Such a trigger can be an electrochemical activation used in the project. The project was implemented from July 2013 to December 2016 by Arhel Ltd, National Institute of Biology and the Municipality of Bled.

With more than 182 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today’s most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. By awarding prizes, they want to enhance global attention to sustainable environmental solutions that can be used everywhere – and motivate people to become active in this field as well.
