Stržen

In September, the Notranjska Regional Park, together with the DOPPS-Birdlife Slovenia, The Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia, Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation and the company Hidrotehnik started the implementation of the project LIFE STRŽEN.

The main activity of the project is the renaturation of the stream Stržen on the north side of Snežnik and Javorniki, so that it will meander as it has before the planned drainage.

Between 1844 and 1958, 14 kilometers of streams Stržen, Goriška Brežička, Lipsenjščica, Tresenca and Žerovniščina was transformed into channels for rapid water drainage. Thus, their length decreased by three times, which means that there is less water in Lake Cerknica. Today, there are negative consequences, also due to climate change, which affect more drizzling summers. The lake does not intermittent on every three or four years, but also three times a year. The renaturation will have positive effects on the water dynamics of the intermittent lake, on the plants and animals. The reconstruction of the riverbed will increase the habitat of the Botaurus stellaris, and with the establishment of a peaceful zone, the conditions for a successful nesting will be improved.

The objective of the project is to protect the nature of lake Cerknica and at the same time to promote the development of sustainable tourism and to familiarize tourist providers and guides with nature-friendly ways of guidance. For this purpose, the project will provide educational and other trainings for locals and tourist workers, as well as cultural and other events.

It is a five-year project for which the Notranjska Regional Park received EUR 2.8 million from the European fund, EUR 745,000 from the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning and EUR 22,500 from the Municipality of Cerknica and local companies.

More information about the project is available on the blog, which was created within the project LIFE STRŽEN and on which the latest news about events and novelties will be published.
