LIVE DRAVA project team warmly invites you to the official opening of the observation tower for birds on Lake Ptuj. The event will take place this Friday, 14th October 2016 at 10 am. Minister of the Environment and Spatial Planning Irena Majcen will participate in the event.

This summer a LIVEDRAVA project partners DOPPS – BirdLife Slovenia and Municipality Ptuj built an observation tower for birds on Lake Ptuj. By obtaining an operating permit the tower can now be open for visitors, enabling excellent observation of birds at the lake, particularly of the breeding colonies of Common Terns at the new breeding island.

Lake Ptuj represents only a part of the project area, which covers an area of Drava River from Maribor to Središče ob Dravi. Several actions are being performed to improve habitats of nesting and migrating waterbirds living on project area, from setting up breeding islands to maintaining sandy river banks. As an interesting fact, they established a grazing system with Water Buffalo for long-term and sustainable wetland management in Ormož Basins Nature Reserve. Besides the concrete conservation actions also numerous awareness raising and educational activities are being performed.

The coordinating beneficiary of the project LIVE DRAVA – Riparian ecosystem restoration of the lower Drava River in Slovenia DOPPS – BirdLife Slovenija is performing the project in collaboration with its project partners: VGB Maribor d.o.o., Drava Vodnogospodarsko podjetje Ptuj, d.d. and Municipality Ptuj. The project is co-financed by European commission, Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, Dravske elektrarne Maribor d.o.o. and Municipality Ormož, while Slovenian Environment Agency and Municipality Središče ob Dravi are its supporters.
